A traditional Japanese form of fish art.
Ink is applied to a fresh fish, then paper or silk is placed on the fish, and an impression is made by rubbing.

In addition to Gyotaku, Coastal Impressions Studio offers other fine art including nature printing, watercolor and collage.

Snakehead Fryball

  • Snakehead fish are an invasive species introduced to the Bay in the early 2000’s.  They are changing our Bay.  They have the potential to reduce or even eliminate native fish populations and alter aquatic communities. This picture shows Snakehead adults guarding their young: hundreds of “fry”. They spawn several times a year.  This art media is indirect Gyotaku, a traditional Japanese art form. Silk is pasted on the real fish, and inked dabbers made of silk and cotton are gently pressed on the silk, capturing the surface texture of the actual scales and fins.
